At the end of World War I, legionnaire Sergeant Stanisław hides from captivity at the home of his fiancée Wanda's father. He fights fiercely to defend the honor of his beloved against a band of Austrian marauders, but is forced to flee. Together with his friend, a corporal, they end up in Yugoslavia, and then in Africa. Meanwhile, back home, Wanda gives birth to a child...
